Bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals for treatment of osseous metastases, Part 1: α therapy with 223Ra-dichloride.
Metastatic disease to bone is commonly seen in the advanced stages of many cancers. The cardinal symptom, pain, is often the cause of significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. Treatment of bone pain includes nonsteroidal analgesics and opiates; however, long-term use of these drugs is commonly associated with significant side effects, and tolerance is common. External-beam radiation th...

Introduction: The palliative care in patients with bone metastasis includes variety of techniques such as conventional analgesics, surgery, external beam radiotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and using bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals. Even some of the recent works used combined methods like chemotherapy and radionuclide therapy or using radionuclide therapy as adjuvant ...
متن کاملRadiopharmaceutical therapy for palliation of bone pain from osseous metastases.
Bone metastasis occurs as a result of a complex pathophysiologic process between host and tumor cells leading to cellular invasion, migration adhesion, and stimulation of osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity. The process is mediated by parathyroid hormones, cytokines, and tumor-derived factors. Several sequelae occur as a result of osseous metastases and resulting bone pain can lead to signif...
متن کاملResponse to 223Ra-dichloride in castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastasis: A case report
Painful bone metastases are common in prostate cancer, with current treatments including non-steroidal analgesics and opiates, surgery, external beam radiotherapy and bone-targeting β-emitting radiopharmaceuticals. The α-emitting isotope 223Ra-dichloride (Ra-223) has been associated with improved overall survival and increased time to first skeletal-related events in patients with castration-re...

Radium-223 dichloride (Xofigo®; 223Ra) is an alpha-emitting radiopharmaceutical FDA-approved for the treatment of bone metastases in patients with advanced castration-resistant prostate cancer. It is also being examined clinically in patients with breast and lung carcinoma and patients with multiple myeloma. As with other forms of radiation, the aim of 223Ra is to reduce tumor burden by directl...
